WISDOMS
THRU HIKING
• It was something so out of my comfort zone, but I knew that’s what I wanted and needed so I went for it.
No expectations.
• I think when something’s really hard and you quit, it’s a lot harder to rationalize. Whereas when you push through and you make a decision like that was really hard. I made it through it, but I still don’t think I want to do this.
• I think the lesson it taught me (Calendar Year Triple Crown) is just persistence and this whole way of doing things where you have this bigger goal but you have to separate it into micro goals along the way. Cause there’s no way anyone can think of a 7800 mile hike in the aggregate. You have to break it down into not only each trail, but each resupply or just the Smokies or a smaller section or else there’s no way to do it.
• It taught me a lot of just feeling success in small bites.
• There’s so much more mental preparation for things like this then just physical.
• It was really important to just be self-aware and know that its okay to push it off by one day. No one’s going to care. It’s more about how you’re feeling about this thing.
• One we get over that (“letting people down”) and don’t worry so much about that, it’s a lot easier to just focus on what the way to accomplish whatever you’re trying to accomplish the best for you and the most rewarding ways.
• Everything’s really hard physically, like hiking or wanting to continue hiking when your body hurts and stuff, but I think it is just this whole mental game that when you get out on a trail you either love it or you hate it. Or it’s a constant battle. Or you’re accepting of how it is that is the most underrated part of thru hiking. That you don’t know until you’re actually out there.
• You feel so much more present and in the moment. And I think if you just look at it on a bigger scale, zoom out, that you don’t have to have the thru hiking lifestyle to have that. It’s more just trying to take being present in your life.
• So that’s what I love the most about it is you have to be present and that’s the coolest part.
• You can become like lifelong friends in a day on a long trail just because you’re both present the whole day.
• All the people have a story and I think it’s pretty fun to hear all of them. No matter what it is.
• No one knows you like you know you.
• I think its healthy to recognize what I’m giving up before it’s given up.
