WISDOMS

THRU HIKING

• We don’t need to be right with each other all the time.  And it kinda actually creates unique opportunities to chat with each other later about what our individual experience was.

• When you’re hiking these long trails you discover that your body is more capable
of things than you ever thought it could be.

• We had that mentality that we were there to just soak it in and enjoy it.  And we didn’t have to rush.

• [Tyler] If I’m already feeling like I’m dragging, it’s too late.  I have to kinda keep throwing coal (food) on the fire to just keep my body running.  But it seemed like no matter what I did, no matter what I put in it just wasn’t enough for the PCT.  That could have been food selection, but I would estimate that I was eating upwards of 5000-6000 calories a day, but I definitely up that on the AT.  I think I was closer to 7,500 calories/day.

• In my mind, if it is moral boosting or food, it doesn’t matter what it weighs.
And if it helps you get better sleep, it doesn’t matter what it weighs.

• No calorie left behind.

• [Becca] She (the trail) takes you on this emotional rollercoaster. And through walking and
thinking and being alone you’re able to discover things about yourself that you need to
discover in times that you need to discover it.

• There’s something really amazing about the people that you meet and the connections
that you make on these long trails.

• [Tyler] For me, hiking like this, over months and months, was about the scenery.
I learned from the PCT that its so much more than that.

• This is way more than just pretty scenery!

• For the CDT, I took like 8000 photos, which is so many.  And going through them,
I can attach a story to each one almost always involving another person.
Those photos recall the memory, but it’s the memory of the person not necessarily the place.

• The trail becomes a great equalizer.

• Something great about the trail is that you’re not really competing with anyone but yourself.
So you don’t have to hike more than you want to hike and you don’t have to do anything
that you don’t want to do.

• Everyone who is able to do a thru hike should do a thru hike.
