WISDOMS
THRU HIKING
• I went a little more uncomfortable this year. As far as my sleep system.
It was tough at first, but I ended up getting used to it. And I think in the long run
it helped me move along a lot quicker.
• I didn’t carry a tent from Seiad Valley all the way to Kearsarge Pass.
So I was pretty much risking getting rained on. And my plan was if it rained, then I was
just going to walk no matter what time of day it was.
• I learned (on the Appalachian Trail ) that the body can handle way
more than the mind thinks.
• Socially, the Continental Divide Trail is very, very tough.
• I was terrified of hitchhiking on the Appalachian Trail when I first started.
Like I actually had to work up the courage.
• You don’t see thru hikers stretch much even though it’s something extremely important.
• I think it will always be a new adventure. I’ve been lucky enough to experience it (the Pacific Crest Trail) in three completely different scenarios… but for me it’s a new adventure every year, mainly because of the different people you meet.
• My best memories are some of the worst days.
• Just looking at it as a whole can be really overwhelming and that’s going to
cause a lot more mental strain.
• You just gotta embrace it and go for it!
• You’re not going to know if you can do it until you get out there.
FOOD
• I’m really just looking for calories most of the time. So while it may be junk food, it fills me up.
• I had way more energy this year and I think its just because I bumped up the amount I was eating. But I was able to do that because I had gotten rid of so much gear that allowed me to carry a little extra food.
