NHANDI SINGLETON aka SEA LION ~ THRU HIKING TRAIL GEAR & WISDOMS
WISDOMS
THRU HIKING
• Starting the trail I did not know that I would, or didn’t believe, that I would actually finish. I definitely had a serious case of imposter syndrome where I felt that I did not belong on the trail because I had no backpacking experience really prior to.
• I wanted to prove to myself that as a black woman, as someone who didn’t have a ton of backpacking experience, that I could do it. That I was worthy of completing the trail and that it was well worth the sacrifices I’d made to get and that any change, evolution as you say, that we experience through the life is not supposed to be easy.
• I’m just going to go have an experience and I’ll be back.
• Every single day I had to talk myself into “You can do this. You’re going to make it. You’re strong enough. It’s just in your mind at this point.”
• It’s so magical to put your body through that sort of torture every single day.
• I can do hard things that I never would have thought I would do.
• I’m still in awe of that accomplishment. It’s one of my greatest accomplishments.
• Once you have your bubble of people, it’s like we’re just all a group of crazies out here stinking and eating…and hurting and just doing this thing.
• But I was also like, I mean it hurts but we’re either going to go forward or go back. And going back is just as far as going forward, so I might as well go forward.
• It’s really just shown me that I don’t have to pretend to be content with what I’m not content with. And that it’s okay to want change. And it’s okay to be afraid of change. It all really just adds to your uniqueness and your essence as a person.
• I also just learned that I should take a chance and a bet on myself. I again can do way more then I think I can do and that often times its the inner chatter of self doubt and even sometimes the outer chatter of you can’t or you shouldn’t do certain things that’s really just noice. Ultimately, if you want to do something you can and you will if you believe in yourself and put in the effort.
