THRU HIKING WISDOMS

THRU HIKING

• This is your hike. Come off the ledge and really enjoy the fact that today is the only day you have.

• We enjoy the things we are involved in most when we are fully present.

• It puts things in perspective when your time becomes potentially limited.

• I don’t want anyone to go into their own thru hike and feel it wasn’t valuable and good and worthy because they did not reach their expectations.

• It’s never what you think it’s going to be.  Ever!

• You have to know your limits.  You have to know what you’re okay with.
What you feel safe doing and where you’re willing to push it.

• When you’re able to embrace your limits, you can have a lot more grace for yourself.

• I don’t look at my failures and think “Oh I should have been better.” Or “We should have done this differently.”  I think they’re just part of the journey and they make our experiences on trail so much richer.

• I usually keep all of my snacks for the day on the outside of my pack in a Ziploc bag.  And then some of them accessible in the front of my pack in pockets or a fanny pack.

• You can make anything work gear-wise if you want to.

• You can have the best day of your life and the worst day of your life seventeen times within one day.

• You will have days, sometimes weeks, sometimes a couple weeks that are not fun or there are mosquitos all over you and you’re miserable or you’re cold or you’re tired or its rained for ten days…and you still get up and keep going because of whatever you’re why is.

• Never quit on a bad day.  Never ever, ever, ever quit on a bad day!  Make sure you quit on the prettiest, sunniest day you’ve ever seen and let that be the day that you quit.  Cause if you really want to quit, you’ll still want to quit on that day.  But usually its something temporary that’s going to pass and you’re going to have a better perspective or be in a better mood or feel better the next day.

• We easily lose sight of the things that are hard that make it good.

• You always say yes to a ride.  You always say yes to an offer in someone’s home.
