WISDOMS

PACK

• There are two ways you can like cut weight; one is by buying lighter equipment and the other is just learning what you can live without.

FOOD

• Going stove-less, a lot of people use a Talenti jars to rehydrate but that wasn’t quite big enough for me, so I would use a gallon ziplock bag.

• Breakfast - Poptarts

• Lunch – Bagels and cream cheese with hard sausage or tuna wraps with avocado

• Dinner – Ramen

• Desert – Snickers or some other candy.  Save it til you get to camp at night.

• Bars and Energy Chews for extra carbohydrates

• My favorite way to hike is to eat dinner around 5 or 6 and then hike
for another hour or two.  I just find that the best time to hike.
It’s peaceful, the suns setting, the light is really nice.

THRU HIKING

• I think overall being in a group, anywhere from 2 to however big as you want, is important for some of it cause sharing those experiences is what makes it truly special.  Like watching a sunset in New Mexico, “Oh Wow this is awesome”…
but if there’s no one to share it with…

• On all three trails there’s at least one bad section.  On the PCT, the worst was going through the Sierras.  Mosquitos so bad, so thick in the sky that if you stopped for a second you’d be swarmed and as soon as you get to camp you just set up your tent and dive in.  And don’t come out until you’re ready to hike the morning.
On the CDT up in Montana we had the horse flies that were really bothersome.
They will drive you crazy for sure.

• I would say usually (I spend) around $5000 for each (trail)… You have to know what your budget is and what you can do.

• .There are other things to take away (from the trail)
rather than just getting to the end.
